From 2019 to 2024, Lebanon faced a series of escalating crises that profoundly affected its socio-economic and political landscape.
2019:
The country's troubles began with widespread protests in late 2019 against government corruption, economic mismanagement, and deteriorating living conditions. These protests, known as the "October Revolution”.
2020-2022:
The economic situation worsened in 2020 with a severe financial crisis, characterized by hyperinflation, a collapsing currency, and a banking sector in turmoil. The COVID-19 pandemic further strained the health system and economy.
In August 2020, a massive explosion at the Beirut port caused extensive damage, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. Political instability continued, with frequent government changes and ineffective governance. By 2024, Lebanon's challenges included persistent inflation, high unemployment, and widespread poverty, with the international community providing aid to alleviate the dire conditions facing the Lebanese people but it did not reduce the economic crisis.
2023-2024
The situation in South Lebanon has become increasingly tense due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. As hostilities between Israeli occupied and Gaza escalate, South Lebanon has experienced sporadic cross-border incidents, including Israeli bombing of border areas, homes, farmers’ lands, centres, and ambulance and press crews, which led to the displacement of thousands of people from southern villages, raising concerns of a broader conflict. Civilians in South Lebanon are living in a state of uncertainty and fear, with many worried about the potential for a full-scale war. The local infrastructure, already strained by economic and political crises, is further challenged by the increased security measures and potential for displacement. Humanitarian organizations are on high alert, preparing to respond to potential emergencies.
